The Argyle welcomes wind and horn playing friends for a summer celebration of the elegance of Viennese classicism. At the heart of the programme sit two works showcasing some of Mozart’s finest melodies – the joy of Exsultate Jubilate, and the sweeping lyricism of his Piano Concerto #23 featuring outstanding soloist Nicola Meecham (“Excellent… Meecham is completely inside the music” International Record Review). These works are contrasted by American 20th Century composer Florence Price’s Andante Moderato – adapted from her String Quartet #1, its flowing style oozes with luscious harmonies. The programme culminates in Schubert’s Symphony #5; a masterful homage to his stylistic forefathers Mozart and Beethoven, laced with the dramatic touches that would define Schubert’s later works.
